If you’ve been hearing chatter about pickleball everywhere lately and wondering what all the fuss is about, you’re not alone! This fast-growing, fun, and social sport has captured the hearts of people of all ages across the country, including right here in our community!
What Is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It’s played on a smaller court than tennis, with a lower net, using a paddle and a perforated plastic ball (similar to a wiffle ball).
The game can be played as singles (1-on-1) or doubles (2-on-2), making it perfect for family fun, friendly competition, or just staying active.
How Do You Play Pickleball?
The rules are simple and easy to pick up, even if you’re brand new to racket sports:
- Serve diagonally underhand, starting behind the baseline
- The ball must bounce once on each side after the serve before players volley (hit it mid-air)
- Points are scored only by the serving team
- Games are usually played to 11 points, and you must win by 2
- Non-volley zone (aka “the kitchen”) near the net is off-limits for volleys to keep the game safe and fair
Pickleball emphasizes strategy, quick reflexes, and placement over power, so it’s accessible for beginners but still challenging enough for experienced players.
Why Is Pickleball So Popular?
Here’s why pickleball is booming everywhere:
- Easy to learn: The rules are straightforward, so beginners can start having fun quickly
- Social and inclusive: It’s a great way to meet people, build community, and all ages can play
- Low impact: The smaller court and slower ball speed make it easier on the joints compared to tennis
- Great workout: It improves balance, agility, and hand-eye coordination without overdoing it
- Portable and affordable: Equipment is inexpensive and courts are smaller, so it fits in many parks and recreation centers
